March 20 I am a master a socializing and networking, so how come doing it on-line is so hard for me?Its a very strange time for me. I have been working in technology for so long and consider myself an advanced user and even and enthusiast (but not a SUPER enthusiast)! I work at Microsoft and have been used to "eating our own dog-food" and even had fun testing some of the newest devices. In my life, I been known to be considered a social butterfly and I don't find it insulting. I remember when e-mail first came around, it saved me many hours a day waiting by the fax machine for a document that I needed. I even worked at one of the first national ISPs when the fastest speed was 14.4 and we used to IM via a shell account. Its amazing to me how fast the times have changed and just how far technology has come. I have small kids and we often talk about the "old" days, which I think is funny because I am not that old, but to see the world through the eyes of children is so great... Anyway, we were talking about how the first VCRs to have remote controls, were remotes that had CABLES and had to be plugged in and unrolled to actually work. I explained to my son that the first mobile phones were large and strong enough to hammer nails. My son is 7 and he can not even imagine a time before cable TV (at least 10 kids channels to choose from PLUS all of the On Demand options to choose from. He often asks me how we were able to learn things if our parents didn't know if we did not have the Internet... he quickly tunes out when I tell him we used books called encyclopedias. He often ends these conversations with I am glad I live now as he likes electronics (a true male - even this early). I actually get "cool" points from my kids as they enjoy checking out my web-page to see pictures of himself and his sister. When I started my SPACE, it was so long ago and I really only used it to update pictures of my kids so the grandparents and family could see them. I thought I was ahead of the time.. I had my own web page and did not have to code to maintain it. :-) Somehow I was able to manage to stay away from the MySpace craze when it hit. It was not really hard for me to stay away as I did not have a spare moment in my day to do anything but work or take care of my family. As I developed more time, I created a page, but mostly so I could view what was going on as my sister and other close friends had pages. I logged on, checked them out and have barely been back on since then (seriously just once or twice since). Then I changed teams at MS and my new team and the "older" part of society was using FaceBook, so I created and have been trying to keep up on it. I truly love seeing what other people are up to and checking out new pictures. What I have a hard time keeping up with is all of the fun applications, game, quizzes, etc. Every time, I now go to my page, I am amazed at how many cool things people are discovering and inviting me to participate in. I am trying to figure it out and really use it to stay connected with friends and family. At Mix08, I attended some panels that discussed the future of social networks, etc. and am excited about some of the new possibilities they discussed, so hopefully it will get easier for me. Time to run, but I think I will try to write more often. February 25 Change is good!To blog or not to blog.. that is always the question for me. There is just too many ways to let everyone know what is going on. Hell I am just an old fashion gal and like to share my news in person -- apparently that is not enough anymore.
Last October I moved jobs within MS and now longer am working in Security or for the TwC, but have joined DPE. What is that?? Developer & Platform Evangalism :)
So far, so good as I really enjoying learning more about out latest technogies and especially those developer ones.
I just watned to make sure I knew how to log onto my blog still....
I will share more very soon!
-Ali June 07 Security Rocks!Well, here we are on day 4 of the event and I could not be more thrilled about the event!! The sessions are full and the attendees seem very happy
I wanted to make a special shout out to Russ Stinger who stopped by to say hello and tell me to blog more. This one is for you Russ
For those of you who are wondering about Laura's Lab DVD.. the bad news is that we are out of the physical ones, but we are making arrangements for you to have the opportunity to download it from CommNet. I do have to ask that you pretty please wait until you get back to your home or office to download them as the image is HUGE (4.7 Gig). I will make sure to post the link as soon as I get it.
I am personally hoping for the weather to stay clear as I really want to go to Adventure Island and ride some kick ass coasters.
For those of you who are still on-site, make sure to come see sessions tomorrow.
-Ali
June 06 What year was my first? So I am sorry tehat I was not able to blog for the last couple of days. Thanks to those of you who are playing our scavenger hunt. We did have our first winner on day one (very late on day one), but we still have one more prize package!! If you are trying to fill out the questions concerning my first TechEd, I thought I would spell it out here to help make it easier :) My very first TechEd was 2001 in Dallas - I was the overall event owner. In 2003, I moved into content management at TecEd and was the Windows, Security and Management track owner. Stop by to say hi! --Ali June 03 Finally TechEd is here!!I arrived in Florida on Thursday to visit one of my best friends who moved here several years ago. My timing always seems to match one of the tropical storms and this year was no exception as I was here for the arrival of TS Barry. I actually enjoy the storms out here (as long as they stay storms) as I like the thunder, lightning, etc. Now I am here at the event. This year the Security TLC is actually the color we claim it to be :) I personally love yellow and I am very excited about eh feeling in our area as it is bright and fun! Mark (the co-track owner) and I are sitting at the Security Track Info counter getting ready for the event to kick off. One might wonder what we do to get ready...
Actually, right now we are sitting in one of those meetings and we are ready. Tomorrow we have an added chalk talk being presented by Michael Howard during the FIRST session. Michael will be handing out signed copies of his latest book "Writing Secure Code for Windows Vista" plus one or two additional bonus prizes. Stop by to get your copy! Gotta run for now.... Ali May 24 It's going to be 70 degrees here today!I am so excited about the good weahter here in the PNW today! It get's me really excited about WARM weather in FL. I really don't enjoy how hot it is in FL, but for a week I can handle it. I am sitting here in our last track owner meeting before TechEd. What is that? It's the meeting where all of the track leads meet to plan and prepare content and the content elements for the event. It's a fun meeting as we cover the logistical details, last minute changes or enhancements, etc. Today I will be giong to the company store to pick up the much desired MS blue event shirts as well as check to see what cool items might have come in. I have been reviewng the final decks that are coming in and I am very excited about the content. If you attend a session, I ask that you please complete the session evalustion survey at the end of the session. It is so important for us to understand if you liked a session or if we missed something. Not only is the info valuable to us, but every time you complete an eval you will be entered into a drawing for cool devices. I am taking off for a 4 day weekend. I will be off, but not relaxing at all. I am still trying to get my house on the market and have a lot of tasks to complete..... I look forward to seeing you very soon! May 23 11 Days to Sun, Fun and damn good contentT-11 days and we will all be together at TechEd07. This year I wanted to try to do something different and something that I could use my blog for. As I already mentioned, the Security Track is running a scavenger hunt in our YELLOW TLC. Well, yesterday I got permission to purchase an additional prize package and offer it to the FIRST person to correclty complete the scavenger hunt. I can't give too many details this early or my legal will have by butt!! Here is the stuff I can tell you....
Got to run to a meeting... May 21 Less than 2 weeks till Florida... OMGI can't believe that TechEd is almost here! I am so excited, especially since today it feels like a FALL day here in WA!!! It is very gray and gloomy and it has been raining exceptionally heavy for this time of year. I think I have warned before that I am a horrible blogger, but I have a really good excuse (at least lately). I have been very busy buying a new house. So maybe that is not a good excuse for everyone, but I think it is and I have been taking many unexpected vacation days to get all the things in order to close on the new one and I still need to get my old one on the market. So if you are looking to move to Kirkland, WA... let me know and I have a house I can sell you. Why I am so excited about this year's event... because I am the Security Track owner and I love my track and everything assocaited with it. This year the Yellow TLC will be so much FUN and buzzing with excitement. We will be hosting "Securiyt Smoothies" and we will be providing extra comfy lounging spots for you. Not only will the event be buzzing on-site, but we are also launching a TechEd Security virtual site to accompany the overall event one. You may have been reading one of my colleague's blogs, Brian Seitz who is the owner of the site as he has been asking for recommendations from you on what you want to see. We are not only hosting the security content relevant to the event, but you will also find audiocast of interviews with top security experts including Mark Russinovich, Michael Howard and Steve Riley and much, much, more. One of the fun things that you can do and win a prize (if you attend in person) will be to play the Security Scavenger Hunt! The only way to play will be to log on to our virtual site to get the questions and full details. So I will blog more this week and next week and reveal the URL to our virtual site as well as well as more details about our game. I have to go and dig myself out of my backlog of mail. More later.... --Ali April 23 Security Stuff41 days until TechEd..... I can't believe that it is almost here. It is sneaking up very fast and I am VERY excited as we have a lot of great things planned this year!! I am currently finalizing the details the fun stuff for our Technical Learning Center. What do I mean by fun stuff?? You know the latte's and other snacks and give-a-ways and stuff like that. I will give more details once I can and if my legal will let me. Bottom line you will want to make sure you come by the yellow TLC and especially the security area to check stuff out. Have you scheduled you week yet?? Make sure you plan on staying through the end of the day on Friday. If you don't you will miss kick butt sessions by both Mark Russinovich and Steve Riley. That's right as they are presenting on the last day and you will not want to miss them!!!! I konw I will be there! Something else new the security track is working on for this year's event. It will be a virtual site that will accompany the event, our plan is to highlight experts, provide additional audio and video clips. We are even planning on hosting a web cam of our area so if you can't be there, you can see what is going on. Perhaps we will let you use it to wave at you boss and show them how much fun you are having at TechEd. Stay tuned as I will let you know the URL and the date it will launch via my blog. March 08 It's YELLOW this year!!!If you atteneded TechEd last year, then you are familar with the Technical Learning Center (TLC). Well this year it is gong to be better than ever!! This year the following tracks will share one of the TLC areas: Security, Windows Infrastracture, Client and Management.
Last year they called us the RED area, but if you were there and not color blind you would have clearly seen that it was ROARNGE (our signage was orange not red). This year we were proposed to be RED this year with an assurance that they would get it right. Well, we decided to be YELLOW this year instead (as it is the only Windows color left for us to choose from). I figure there is no way to mess up YELLOW! I really happen to like yellow! And my office was pranked last year while I was out at Blackhat and everything was covered and changed to yellow. Her at MS we are not allowed to paint our walls, so I have left mine yellow and my office is very BRIGHT. I have a nickname of Miss
I am trying to decide what "fun thing" to purchase for our TLC area. I might have to make sure we have enought caffeine with coffee, or smoothies. Maybe this year, I can have one day with a little happy hour in the yellow TLC??? What about a give-a-way?? What kind of prizes do you attendees want?? What about these: Zunes, Xbox360's, flat panel monitors, smartphones?? I really want to make sure that you all are getting things that you want!! I think the GPS things are cool too, but you tell me. So far, I know that the TechEd bloggers are reading this, but I am not sure who else is........
Back to work and getting ready for another TechEd Track Owner Meeting!
--Ali February 28 Sessions are 95% finalT-15 weeks and we will be in
You will start to see the session titles populate on the TechEd content site including the security track!! Before you see the final ones, I wanted to let you know that you will be able to see Steve Riley, Mark Russinovich, Michael Howard as new to the US event but not new to our Europen TechEds we will have Rafal Lukawiecki and Marcus Murray. The SESSIONS this year KICK BUTT! It will be a great event as usual, but an especically speacial one as it is the 15th Anniversary of TechEd. I have been working on this event for over 5 years in one capacity or another and it has grown into a better event every year!!
If you have not registered, I promise you the event will sell out!!! Take adventage of the early bird discount and make sure you will be there!
I am back off to get my sessions FINAL and completely released in the Content Tool.
In my next BLOG, I think I will write about the Session Preference Tool and what it means to our sessions and speakers.
Back to cuss at the weather and watch the school web sites and hope they don't show closures.
February 23 Women In TechnologyTechEd this year is going to be one of the best ever! I just had lunch yesterday to help brainstorm about the Women in Technology Luncheon or do I say fomerly a luncheon. In the fall I attended a grass roots women in tech networking dinner and it was fun. We discussed moving the luncheon instead to a reception (perhaps 6PM on Wed.)??? I think it would be a great change and really give the participants better chance to network and strengthen the community. We discussed the serious problem that we all face with helping make "Technolgy Cool" and desireable to young girls. How do we reach them earlier and let them know the great opportunites that are out there for them in and around technology!! This is a test if anyone is reading my blog... what do you think?? If you have attened or are interested in attending this year's Women in Technology Event (open to men too) what would you like to see? What would make the event worth your while to attend. What ideas do you have to share with us?? I hope to get at least one post on this as I know the lady who is in charge of the event and I just sent her my blog link so she could jump in
By the way have you registered yet?? I have and I was able to get a close hote!! This year is GUARANTEED to sell out so make sure you don't miss out and get on board. The event is only 15 weeks away!
15 weeks -- oh hell, I better get back to work on the session list.
February 19 TechEd Session Time!!It's session time! Wow, I continue to be blown away by the high quality of session submissions we get for TechEd! Thanks to all of those who submitted sessions. I am currently working through the list of security submissions (over +200) and working with the other track owners to make sure we don't have any duplicates and that we can provide the best sessions. We are not only deciding on the sessions, but the webcast, HOLs (including ILLs) and chalk talks. I want to bring back the lightning demos in our Technical Learning Center (TLC) and will keep you posted.
Next week is the time when we will finalize our sessions and then start letting those who proposed sessions the status of their submissions. I can't spend too much time blogging now, as I need to get back to the session list! I did want to take a breather and let you all know that the SECURITY TRACK is going to be GREAT! I know you expect nothing less
BTW -- I got a new machine and I love it!!
February 13 RSA Confrence 2007 in San Francisco was one to remember!!Last week as amazing in San Francisco!! It was my 3rd RSA on the MS planning team and we pulled off a HUGE sucess (at least in my eyes)!! First of all I
As usual I lost my voice during the event and for the first time I stayed and enjoyed the closing keynote - General Collin Powell. He was very funny, sincere and inspirational. I think it was a great thing that RSA brouhgt in someone who was able to close the event like that!
I have to run as we are ending the TechEd TLC planning meeting that we are in. I have asked for a new color and they have offered our area yellow (which I just might take). This next week we will be finalizing our sessions for this year's event.
I have alreaady registred for the event along with 1699 other people. Can you believe that already?? This year's event is sure to SELL OUT again and I can't wait!!
I personally want to have the Security Track meet your needs so feel free to post to my blog and let me know what you want, need and think of all things security. January 19 TechEd has begun - at least the planningIt's the end of January and I am sitting here in one of our TechEd track owner meeting. It's a great break for the RSA planning that I have been doing.
I am so excited to be kicking off this year's TE as I LOVE TechEd. I have been part of the planning for so long on the event, that sometimes I forget how much fun it is. The call for papers has been open and closes next week. Then the real fun begins... selecting the content.
I hope that I can help put together a kick ass track!! We have a lot of new things to cover and new products shipping and I can't wait!!! For those of you who were there last year, I have REQUESTED that our Technical Learning Center (TLC) not be ROANGE.
One of the most exciting things for me is all of the improvements and innovations that TechEd keeps doing. I can't share any of them yet, but I know you will enjoy them on-site. I am submitting my favorite bands to the overall organizers for the party.... but I have to remember that in Orlando we usually host it at one of the major theme parks. That ok for me as I love those too.
I have to go as my battery is going to DIE and I don't have my power cord.
Please come see me at TechEd!! January 02 2007 is already hereI can't believe it's already 2007!! I am back today after much needed time off!!! I personally am glad that December is gone as it was not a lucky month for me.
The event season is already in full swing with RSA07 and TechReady4 both the same week in February. The call for papers for TechEd has gone out and before we know it we will be in Florida.
I did not blog much in the last year, but I will more this year. Most of my blog will be work related, but I am a very social person, so expect to see some entries about my family and life outside work.
Happy New Year!! |
